Wildcard DNS

I need to setup a wildcard DNS so I can offer free forums. My trouble is I am not experienced doing this on the server. I have tried several suggestions I picked up elsewhere, but nothing seems to work. Any assistance would be appreciated.

Have you setup the DNS? DNS is nothing to do with mod_rewrite, DNS gets the request to the server, a long time before mod_rewrite ever runs. You need to look in your domain control panel or ask your registrar.
Once you have the DNS what are you going to do to setup the forums? What do you need mod_rewrite to do?
