Mask the domain

Using a single web hosting account to host multiple sites

Mask the domain

Postby Vero44 » Wed Dec 03, 2008 10:28 am

Hi

I have web hosting with a company. I use subdomains for all of my websites. I have quite a few domain names and redirect them to the subdomain, eg:

www.greatname.com gets redirected to www.myname.com/greatname

www.bettername.com gets redirected to www.myname.com/bettername

My problem is that even if I do a framed redirect, the browser statusbar shows my domain name on links and page loads. Can mod_rewrite help here to mask my domain and make it look more professional?

You will probably need more than mod_rewrite.

Where do the domains go to without any redirects or frames?
Do you have access to the server configuration?

Hi Richard, thanks for the reply

The domains go to 1and1.co.uk where they are redirected in frames by my request via the 1and1 control panel. I can do a simple redirect but the website address appears exactly as my hosting domain/subdomain then.

I can access the host server config in terms of .htaccess files but would need to know more about what you would propose changing to know if I have complete access.

You need normal DNS instead of a frame or redirect. Then you would need to configure the server (not in a .htaccess file).

Your first step should be to ask your hosts if they have an add-on domains option (or look in your hosting control panel).
