4 silly questions about subdomain . . .

Postby adrianliem » Fri Mar 03, 2006 5:57 pm

Hi there
i'm currently developing my web application on localhost -- i have never tried to host in a web server yet.
and so, i have several silly questions to ask...

1. is it possible to test the subdomain redirection in the localhost? so it's like, http://subdomain.localhost/bla/bla . if it is possible, how, or what should i do?

2. several web hosting limit their max subdomain. eg, webhosting X limit their client's maximum subdomain to be 100. while i want to give each member of my site for their own subdomain (http://memberusername.mydomain.com) -- which apperently should be more than 100.
is subdomain redirection via mod_rewrite also considered as a "real" subdomain? --> so even if i use subdomain redirection via mod_rewrite, i cannot go beyond 100 subdomains.

3. what is the difference between ordinary subdomain which is
a. set via apache/cpanel
b. and the subdomain via mod_rewrite?
i mean, if i do the subdomain redirection via mod_rewrite, should the apache setting be modified too?

4. regarding to #2, why does web hosting limits the max subdomain feature? is that because if we add a lot of subdomains, it will decrease the performance of the web server a lot?
what about the subdomain redirection via mod_rewrite? will it decrease the performance of the web server a lot too?

thanks in advanced for your kind replies :)
