Errr help me with transparent redirect

I use exactly to the guide of Apache but it doesn't work

RewriteEngine on
RewriteRule ^/$ /abc/ [R]

Consider all refer to http://www.mydomain.com will be taken to http://www.mydomain.com/abc/

RewriteRule ^$ abc/ [R]
