displaying user folders as if they exist

New to mod_rewrite? This is a good place to start.

displaying user folders as if they exist

what I am trying to do it fairly simple. I am able to create a mod_rewrite similar to this. But this one doesnt work unfortunately. Here is what I am tryşng to accomplish

www.example.com/John/ ---> www.example.com/userFolders/user/

however when the url is this:

www.example.com/styles It shouldnt be mod_rewrtiable and actually access the folder /styles

So at the end when I enter this url:

www.example.com/John/index.html ----> www.example.com/userFolders/user/index.html

and

www.example.com/John/news.php?page=10 ----> www.example.com/userFolders/user/news.php?page=10

and

www.example.com/styles/style.css doesnt get mod-rewrite at all.

I have done a more complex subdomained version of this. But when I take out the subdomain related lines, It doesnt work.

Also, could somebody explain what rewriteBase is for. Thank you very much
