Mod_rewrite should work, but it doesn't

Hello,

my host supports mod_rewrite and I renamed the htaccess.txt file into .htaccess and turned the option on in global configuration, but then I get the internal 500 error.
Not even the normal SEF option works :/ The page which opens when SEF s enabled is a strongly misconfigured fronpage.

I use Joomla 1.5 with PHP5.

Any help with this issue much appreciated, thanks in advance,

I wasn't clear. What i want you to do is put

Code: Select all

RewriteEngine On

in your .htaccess file with nothing else. If you get a 500 error, the problem is that you don't have mod_rewrite/aren't allowed to use it. If you do not get an error the problem is something else.
