Install mod_rewrite as a module

I've looked around, and googled for a good 2 hours or so, and it looks like since apache 1.2 you have to compile apache with the --enable-module=rewrite option.

My questions are:
1) is there any way to load mod_rewrite as a module (ie with the LoadModule directive)

2) is there any way to find out what options apache was compiled with before, then recompile with all the old options plus the new rewrite module (ie. ssl modules, etc)
