remove password from headers

Is it possible to remove "Authorization: Basic blahblahblah" field from headers and put "REMOTE_USER: Peter" instead it, where Peter is user name base64decoded from blahblahblah. I need to remove password in mod_proxy, because I won't to pass it over the network.

So, my question: is it possible to do it with mod_rewrite ?
