Where to put rules

For Apache 2.x where should the mod_rewrite lines go? Im hosting numerous sites / domains using NameVirtualHost and want the rewrite code to apply to specific hosts. Should the rules for each domain go in the Vhosts.conf VirtualHost definitions?
