mod_write blows up my apache 1.3.26

New to mod_rewrite? This is a good place to start.

mod_write blows up my apache 1.3.26

If I create a simple rewrite rule, like:

RewriteEngine on
RewriteBase /foo/
RewriteRule ^(.*) /bar.php

when the rule is invoked, my httpd process starts chewing up memory and CPU untill all resources are exausted. The worst part is that there is no indication of what is causing the problem. Nothing about mod_rewrite shows up in any of the logs.

I have to kill the process before it eats everything and the box needs to be rebooted.

This happens on RedHat 7.2 (latest kernel) with Apache 1.3.26 (Plesk.com PSA 5.0.2)

Why doesn't mod_rewrite throw errors before it blows up my server?
