410 a directory

I am try to redirect the entire /confirmation/ directory to 410


the code is below,

RewriteEngine on
rewritecond %{REQUEST_URI} confirmation
REWRITERULE (.*) $1 [g,L]

with xampp running on windows it works fine. on the real server nothing. It is apache, and php is working fine.

any ideas????
