Can arguments be hidden from the browser location bar

I know how to make the below link call the read.php function and pass page=23&type=text.

www.mydomain.com/read/cookingforfun/23/type/text

But... can the resulting location bar in the browser simply display...

www.mydomain.com/cookingforfun

(As that's the URL I'd like visitors to bookmark)
