rewriting some url from script php

hi to all, i'm an italian user so scuse me for my bad english !!! ...i have some url as : www.site.it/1 or www.site.it/12 ecc ..now i'd like the url www.site.it/12 corrisponde to www.site.it/mark where the name mark is extracted from db table with ID 12 ..... is possible resolve this problem with rewrite engine? i think is better for my problem create a new page .php who extract from db the name associate to id and after a htaccess who run this page .....is possible? please scuse me for the language.....thank you very much to all bye
