Need to stop Search engines looking for deleted directories

Hello,

Over a period of time whilst the site has been changing I have deleted a few directories, in the error logs for the site I find that search engines are getting 404 errors when they look for the directories.

the deleted directories were

cpics
epics
cmidis
amazon
click2help

I also permanently deleted the following files which are still being searched for

thm_joe.jpg
thm_joe3.jpg
thm_joe4.jpg
joe.jpg
joe2.jpg
joe3.jpg
joe4.jpg

How would I create a rewrite rule to tell the search engines that these have gone permanently?
